"Vet 2 Vet" Mentorship Program

The objective of the Vet to Vet mentorship program at UH Mānoa is to assist veterans with a successful transition from military to college. The program hopes that the relationships established will form lasting bonds between students, faculty, and staff that will promote fellowship, well-being, and success.

Mentors are all volunteers and consist of veterans who are part of the UH Mānoa Faculty, Staff, and student body. Mentors draw from their own experience and knowledge to assist students in social, academic, extracurricular activities, and professional development.

Mentor Duties:

  • Assist students as they make the transition from military to college at UH Mānoa by providing general advice, assistance, and support through personal transition experiences.
    • Utilize what you already know. You have the experience and wisdom as someone who has already gone through the process with registration, VA educational benefits, etc.
  • Assist students in becoming involved in extracurricular activities, joining a Registered Independent Student Organization, and sports.
    • If you’re involved in something on or off campus and your mentee is interested, bring him/her along.

Program Goal:

Provide individual guidance and support to each veteran student participant over the course of his or her transition process into the university setting.

Mentors (Faculty, Staff, and Student):

Veterans who are current faculty, staff, and students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa can assist incoming and current student veterans and military members transition into the university through individual meetings and email correspondence.

This is an informal mentoring program that matches veteran students to veteran faculty, staff, and upperclassmen student veterans who are closer to graduation. Your time and care are the only requirements. The amount of time you commit is at your discretion!

Mentors will have their names and contact information posted on the veteran's website for the student to select the mentor that best fits them.

Share your experiences, share your love of UHM -- help another soldier/sailor/airman/marine by being a contact person as they enter into the university. If you are interested in serving a mentor, please contact the Office of Veteran Student Services at ovss@hawaii.edu.

Mentees (Students):

The "Vet 2 Vet" Mentorship Program was established to ensure that student veterans have the proper guidance through their educational journey by being connected with veterans who are part of UH Mānoa’s Faculty, Staff, and student body.

Mentoring is an extremely powerful tool for student development. A mentor can assist in expanding educational, career and personal goals. Mentors help to resolve issues and problems before they become serious.

This program promotes to increase awareness of UHM, its mission, and the importance of student veterans as members of our campus community. Our goal is to set you up for success at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

If you are interested in being a mentee and selecting a mentor, please contact the Office of Veteran Student Services at ovss@hawaii.edu.
